EditExcluded Works
Some kinds of publication are not covered by the CLA licence. If licensees want to photocopy anything from this list, they may have to contact the publisher direct, for the following catagories of works:
• Works published outside the UK (They will be licenced by CLA's equivalent in that country.
See list)
• All newspapers (licence from
NLA required)
• Hymns (licence from
CCLI required)
• Works held back from the CLA eg by their publishers (See the CLA website:
excluded works for the full list)
• Printed music including the words
• Maps, charts, books of tables
• Tests and public exam papers
• Correspondence courses
• Workbooks, workcards or assignment sheets
• Publications intended for the student to write on for "once only" use
• Industrial house journals
• Photocopiable publications (purchase price includes permission to copy as indicated in the book)
• 'Copying not permitted' publications
• Unpublished, privately prepared material, eg theses, dissertations, internal reports, memoranda, committee minutes notices and ephemera(such as brochures, curculars and handouts)
• Documents issued for tuition purposes and limited to clientele who pay fees
Royalties are not allocated against specific excluded titles.
NB, categories of excluded works are constantly under review. In addition, a publisher may exclude individual titles from the licences. These are listed on the
CLA Excluded Works List
